The Oregon Coast is truly one of the most breathtaking regions in the United States, and Hollywood certainly agrees! Oregon's beaches have become a go-to destination for filmmakers seeking that perfect moody, atmospheric setting. Back in 1975, the Central Coast played host to parts of the iconic "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." In the early 2000s, the beautiful Ecola State Park became a filming location for scenes in the first Twilight movie.
In recent years, more and more couples have been choosing this incredible area for their adventure elopements, and it's easy to see why. The landscapes here are so otherworldly and dramatic, they almost look like they belong on another planet! Plus, while the neighboring state of Washington offers some similarly gorgeous spots, those locations can get pretty crowded. The Oregon Coast offers the perfect opportunity to capture pristine, untouched beauty. With its extensive coastline, there's a great variety of beaches, so you can always find a spot for a private photoshoot with nature.

Some of the couples I've worked with have chosen Oregon's beaches because they wanted a true adventure elopement. An intimate, one-on-one experience with nature. Others were simply captivated by the stunning beauty of Oregon they saw in photos on Pinterest. I recommend the Oregon Coast not only for these reasons, but also for the incredible benefits I've outlined below.
1. It's Open Year-Round.
You can visit the Oregon Coast any time of the year. Many places in the Pacific Northwest can only be accessed during summer, late spring, or early fall, which really limits your location choices. Here, however, you can go year-round, and it will be beautiful in any weather (just in different ways).
2. It's Free
All beaches along the 363 miles of Oregon's coastline are free and open to the public, thanks to the Oregon Beach Bill passed in 1967. This means you don't have to pay to relax on the beach or hold an elopement ceremony. However, keep in mind that you will need to pay for a parking permit to park near some beaches.
3. It's Incredibly Diverse
The Oregon Coast includes three distinct regions: the North Coast, Central Coast, and South Coast. Each has its own unique vibe and attractions. This diversity is perfect for elopements if you want lots of photos from places that look completely different from each other. You'll discover sand dunes, charming historic towns, vast beaches with rugged coastlines, lighthouses, and evergreen-forested hills that slope down to crystal-clear azure waters.
4. It's Absolutely Cinematic
Not only do some places here look like they're from another planet, but many famous films have actually been shot here! The most well-known is Twilight, and for many fans, it's become a must-visit destination to relive those magical movie moments. There's even an official Oregon Film Trail that includes the historic Timberline Lodge (where "The Shining" was filmed in 1980), Smith Rock State Park (featured in "Wild" from 2014), and Ecola State Park (where "Twilight" was filmed).
5. It Has That Perfect Small-Town Vibe
Oregon's largest cities are located far from the coast, which means the coastline is dotted with charming small towns that have kept their authentic, old-world atmosphere. Places like Seaside, Cannon Beach, Arch Cape, Manzanita, Brookings, Yachats, Pacific City, Garibaldi, and Florence all deserve a spot on your must-visit list for gorgeous couple photos. These towns are adorable, never overcrowded, and perfectly capture the essence of what an elopement should be. I mean escaping civilization to celebrate the start of your family in an intimate, meaningful way.

I can't tell you how many couples want to include their beloved pets in their elopement, but worry they'll have to choose between their furry family members and a beautiful backdrop for photos. I've seen the heartbreak when they think they have to make this choice. Well, here's some wonderful news: the Oregon Coast is almost completely pet-friendly! Your pets are welcome on most ocean beaches (just make sure to bring a leash). South Beach State Park and Tugman State Park even offer dog-friendly beaches with special off-leash areas where your pup can run free!

Seasonal Considerations
The backdrop you'll get for your elopement depends entirely on the season you choose, and honestly, everything changes dramatically from month to month. Here's what to expect:
Summer
It’s a time of warm weather and lots of activities. However, I don't recommend this season because the beaches are crowded and it's hard to find parking. Additionally, peak season means high prices. If you do decide to choose summer for your elopement, opt for a weekday sunrise or sunset ceremony and avoid popular spots like Cannon Beach. Instead, explore Southern Oregon or the quieter coastal towns in between.
Mid-Season (Spring or Fall)
This is when the fog starts rolling into those cozy little seaside towns, and the weather becomes a bit more unpredictable. But here's the silver lining: it's much less crowded, and you'll have amazing opportunities to encounter wildlife! Think of seals lounging on sandy beaches and beautiful migrating birds. September and October are great options, but I should point out that it can be rainy and foggy, especially in October.
Winter
If you're someone who absolutely loves that moody, dramatic atmosphere, winter is your time to shine. You can capture incredible photos with massive waves crashing behind you, and it's also prime time for whale watching. Since the whole idea of an adventure elopement is to go somewhere far away where you can be alone together and experience something truly special, the Oregon Coast in winter is honestly one of the best places to make that happen.
Weather Reality Check
There's really no such thing as "bad" weather, it all depends on your attitude. You absolutely need to keep this in mind when planning your Oregon Coast elopement. You could create the most fantastic plan for your special day, and it might get completely turned upside down if perfect weather is essential to your vision. However, if you're working with me, I promise we'll have a solid backup plan ready to save your important date, and you'll have an amazing elopement no matter what Mother Nature throws at us.
Location Variety
The Oregon Coast is made up of three distinct zones (North Coast, Central Coast, South Coast), and each one has its own unique landscape and atmosphere:

Marriage License Requirements
To legally elope in Oregon, you'll need to obtain a state marriage license, have two witnesses present, and hire an officiant. My husband and my assistant Pasha will officiate your elopement ceremony as a complimentary service if you need one. We can also find witnesses among the tourists who visit the Oregon Coast.
To get a marriage license, here's how the process works: you apply for the license, wait a couple of weeks for them to receive and process your application by mail, then go in person to pick up the license, and then wait at least another 3 days before you can use it. How can you shorten this period? Some counties allow you to fill out an additional form and pay $10 to waive the 3-day waiting period, so you can get married the same day you receive your license. Also, remember that you have a 60-day window before your ceremony to get this taken care of.
You can apply for your marriage license in person or by mail. However, you must pick it up in person at least three days before your wedding date. Learn more here.
Permits
The great news is that Oregon is incredibly wedding-friendly. There is usually no need for Special Use Permits for elopements on public beaches (or weddings with fewer than 50 people) without structures, such as arches, floral arrangements, chairs, etc.
When preparing for an elopement, remember that there are always exceptions. For example, during summer months some places can require permits. This is why it's so important to discuss your choice of location in advance with an experienced person who knows what you may need.
If you're planning to get married in a state park, the requirements vary by location, but many places are completely open and free for couples who want to tie the knot there.

Parking Permits
Some places require you to purchase a parking permit. For example, at Ecola State Park, it costs $10 per car for one day, or you can use an annual Oregon State Parks Permit or an Oregon Pacific Coast Passport. Learn more here.
Top Activities for Your Oregon Coast Elopement Adventure
The small beach towns with their peaceful atmosphere and secluded beach spots are absolutely perfect for elopements. You can spend your special day in a completely relaxed setting, just enjoying each other's company and this amazing time together. But if you're looking for a little more excitement, you'll find plenty of options here. These are my top activity recommendations to add some extra adrenaline or unforgettable emotions to your one-of-a-kind experience.
Beach Time
How you spend your beach time depends on your preferences.
You can share a sunrise coffee and read or play games together. You'll get great pictures if you hold a luxury picnic or fly a kite on the beach. If your elopement is at dawn, it's a great time to have a bonfire with s'mores and hot dogs. After dawn, you’ll enjoy stargazing on the beach.
One of my favorite activities is taking a dip in the ocean in your elopement attire. You'll get an unforgettable experience and funny photos.
Whale Watching
From mid-December through mid-January, more than 20,000 whales make their incredible journey south to the warm lagoons of Baja California, Mexico. You can watch this amazing spectacle from specially equipped viewing areas. It's truly breathtaking!
Surfing
The consistent waves, especially from late spring to early fall, make the Oregon Coast a fantastic spot for surfing enthusiasts. I can't promise I'll be out there on a surfboard with you to capture the action, but I can definitely provide you with a list of the best spots to experience Oregon's amazing waves! If you've never tried surfing, you can take a lesson together.
Exploring Sand Dunes
The Oregon Coast is famous for a place called the Sand Dunes. This location inspired Frank Herbert, the creator of the classic sci-fi novel Dune. You can explore the dunes on foot or ride ATVs and sandboards. You could even have a Mad Max-style elopement here.
Horseback Riding
What could be more romantic than a horseback ride on the beach in the light of the setting sun? Golden hour is the best time to take photos, and it can be spent actively and enjoyably.
Train Rides
The Oregon Coast is home to a historic railroad with a retro train. You can take one of the many excursions and enjoy views of the region from your window while listening to the guide's stories and enjoying the food.
Crabbing
The months ending in "r" (September, October, November, and December) are generally the best time for crabbing, with peak season running from late summer through early winter. Imagine catching your own fresh crabs and then cooking them later in the most romantic setting!
Wine Tasting
Fresh seafood and wine are simply meant to be together, and Oregon happens to be a world-renowned wine region! You'll discover exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay here. You can visit local wineries with a tour guide or explore on your own.

1. Choose Your Date (or At Least the Season)
How your adventure elopement will look depends largely on the season or month you choose, so this is the first decision to make. When planning your elopement, I always recommend having flexible dates if possible. This gives you so many more options when it comes to finding vendors and booking the perfect accommodations.
2. Book Your First Call with Me
Even if you're not quite sure when or where you want to elope, please fill out my contact form to schedule a call as soon as possible! My schedule can get pretty tight since I open bookings for the following year right when the current year begins, which means those popular dates might already be taken. During our call, we'll discuss all your options, and I can give you expert advice on required permits, exciting activities, and the best places to stay.
3. Plan Your Perfect Elopement with Me
Since I do location scouting, I’ll create a customized list of locations based on your preferences. When you know what location you prefer, I’ll recommend the area where it's best to look for accommodation. After you book accommodation, I’ll provide you with lists of trusted vendors whom I usually work with and a step-by-step plan of what to do next (permits, marriage license, list of necessary clothing, what activities to include on the day).
Three months before the wedding, when you have already defined the elopement plan, I will create a detailed timeline for you, which we’ll discuss together over the phone.
4. Book Your Accommodations
The Oregon Coast is an incredibly popular tourist destination, so please don't wait too long to book your place to stay – the sooner, the better!
5. Plan Your Activities
Some of the most amazing activities need to be booked well in advance. Once you know your dates and have your plan in place, start booking things like wine tours and making restaurant reservations. You don't need to book a full year ahead, but definitely don't wait until the last minute.
6. Book Your Other Vendor Services
You'll likely want services like flowers, cake or makeup. It's always better to book early rather than scramble at the last minute. During our initial call, I'll be happy to recommend the best local options, or you're welcome to do your own research if you prefer.
7. Stay in Close Touch with Me
